Phytoplankton essays
Phytoplankton essays Upon a short period of very extensive research, one can conclude many things about the phytoplankton content of the waters surrounding the continent of Antarctica.First of all, what is phytoplankton? Phytoplankton is defined as planktonic plants and other autotrophs which are the most important primary producers in many marine ecosystems. (p. 213 Castro-Huber) Many factors influence the growth of phytoplankton such as sunlight, water temperature, and water current. In my specific study of the pytoplankton present in Antarctic waters, I discovered a most unusual pattern of growth: only on three occasions from September 1997 to March 2000 was phytoplankton present in the waters of Antarctica. Of the three individual times that phytoplankton was present in the water, two of these occured in December 1998 and 1999, the other in September 1998. Every other month from September 1997 until March 2000, the waters contained a phytoplankton reading of 0 (zero). The only conclusion that can be made about the numerous occasions in which phytoplankton was absent from the waters is that massive sheets of ice cover the water around the continent of Antarctia making unacceptable conditions for the ...

The Great Sphinx of the Giza Plateau
The Great Sphinx of the Giza Plateau Free Online Research Papers On the Giza plateau stands the one and only great sphinx. The Sphinx was carved from the bedrock of the Giza plateau, the Sphinx is a mysterious marvel from the days of ancient Egypt. With the body of a lion and the head of a king or god, the sphinx has come to symbolize strength and wisdom. From the north side of the Sphinx reveals the proportion of the body to the head. It would appear as though the head is small in proportion to the body. Because of the changing desert terrain, the body of the Sphinx has been buried over the past several thousand years. Most recently in 1905, the sand has been cleared away to expose the magnitude and beauty of the entirety of the Sphinx. The paws themselves are 50 feet long while the entire length is 150 feet. The head is 30 feet long and 14 feet wide. Because certain layers of the stone are softer than others, there is a high degree of erosion that has claimed the original detail of the carved figure. Although the head of the Sphinx is badly broken in some places, traces of the original paint can still be seen near one ear. Originally it is believed that the Sphinx was painted and was quite colorful. Since then, the nose and beard have been broken away. The nose was the unfortunate victim of target practice by the Turks in the Turkish period. It is often erroneously assumed that the nose was shot off by Napoleons men, but 18th century drawings reveal that the nose was missing long before Napoleons arrival. In between the paws of the Sphinx is a stela, now called the Dream Stela, which is inscribed with a story. The 18th Dynasty story tells of the time that Thutmosis IV fell asleep under the Sphinx which was covered to the neck in sand. Thutmosis had a dream that the Sphinx spoke to him and promised that if he would free the Sphinx from the sand, Thutmosis would be destined to become king of Egypt. During the 18th Dynasty, Thutmosis IV probably did clear the Sphinx at that time. But it is more likely that the story about the dream was created for a ancient propaganda story to help prove the legitimacy of the king. This type of story could support the validity of a kingship, asserting and assuring the power of the pharaoh as designated by the gods, or in this case, the Sphinx itself. About 12500 years ago the great sphinx was built carved right from the bedrock of the Giza plateau. Built with the head of a pharaoh and the body of a lion its meant to show power strength and wisdom, but it was destroyed in the 18th century by napoleons men but still stands to this very day because of its authority and stability. associatedcontent.com/article/19568/a_history_of_the_great_sphinx_of_giza.html. Parliamentary Vs. Presidential Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Parliamentary Vs. Presidential - Essay Example The government can be dissolved at will by the parliament by means of a no confidence vote or the leader of the cabinet may dissolve the parliament if it is not able to function anymore. On the contrary, a presidential government is one in which the executive branch is not accountable to the legislative branch. Both branches can check the actions of the other branch. The President and the members of Congress are elected in separate elections. The President holds office for a fixed term and his authority is not subject to direct control of the legislature. However, the President cannot dissolve government and order a new election. Clearly, there is a difference in the voting system between a parliamentary government and a presidential government. The indefinite terms of office in a parliamentary system allows a party to hold office and thus are permanent in order to provide some stability to the system. However, it may be argued that this may lead to unfavorable type of ruling for a country. This is because the possibility of the head of government holding office for life contributes towards the making of an autocrat. Especially in nations with weak democratic traditions and with executive powers concentrated in the hands of the party in power, this type of system signals dictatorship. It also does not welcome new ideas or changes that could benefit the economy of a country in the long term. For instance, the former Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew, from 1959 to 1990 recently commented the decision by the current Prime Minister to open a casino in Singapore would never happen under his control. However, he welcomed the changes as fresh and different. A divided executive is one in which the relative powers vary between a Prime Minister and a President, representing two different parties and ideologies. This is important in a system where there are no dual lines of authority. A divided executive results in varied institutional forms to allow

Explain why you feel college students do or don not benefits from Essay
Explain why you feel college students do or don not benefits from participation in extracurricular activities - Essay Example There are numerous oppurtunities to suit individual tastes and requirements. It is better to be sincerely involved and dedicated to one or two activities rather than be a ââ¬ËJack of all trades and master of noneââ¬â¢. Academics are the most important and a student should maintain a balance between the academics and the extra curricular activities. College still want good academic results although a lot of importance is laid on the other activities. Admission officers believe that what you do says a lot about you. Your academic mark sheet give details about your studies but the write up on your extra ââ¬âcurricular activities tell them of the sort of person you are. Every human being has hidden talents which need a platform to evoke from within. Such activities provide an excellent opportunity to realize your own strengths and perhaps even weaknesses. Different academic clubs and societies within the campus help students to work within a group and understand the group dynamics. For instance, for one who is the only child at home, interacting and working with others in a group teaches patience and adjustments. It has been found that students who are involved in extra curricular activities perform better in studies, have a pleasing nature, can relate better with the peer group. It instills in them a sense of confidence. It teaches them how to carry themselves in life. Employers these days lay a lot of stress on extra curricular activities as it ensures the all-round growth of a student. In conclusion I would like to state that life beyond academics only helps to enhance the personality of a student, provided he/she is selective. It empowers a student to make his own decisions. It helps him gain vital experience and skills necessary to guide him into his future path. So participate, bloom and shine! Let your extra curricular activities speak volumes about

Outline and illustrate two ways in which an action may be both self-interested and altruistic Essay Example for Free
Outline and illustrate two ways in which an action may be both self-interested and altruistic Essay Another way in which and action can be both altruistic and self interested is aided by the concept that altruism may lead others to think more highly of you, which is in beneficial for you and makes you feel better about yourself, so is therefore also in your self interest. An example of this is giving to charity. This may give you positive feelings as you enjoy helping others and seeing that your own actions can benefit people other than yourself. Therefore youââ¬â¢re being altruistic and still acting in your self interest. This then illustrates that being altruistic coincides with your self interest as you get positive outcomes by helping others. Disposable Containers for a Disposable Environment :: Expository Exemplification Essays
Disposable Containers for a Disposable Society As society goes through its day-to-day activities, it consumes an enormous amount of liquids. Of course, those liquids are packaged in various types of apparatuses, many of which are disposable. But disposable to whom? "Out of sight-out of mind," maybe? Granted, disposable and throwaway containers are a convenience for the moment, but they are rapidly becoming a devastating eye sore. Disposable bottles and cans invite enormous hazards to the environment. Disposable containers create unsightly neighborhoods and countryside. While driving this weekend, I counted 28 Dr. Pepper bottles and 14 Diet Coke cans in a 2Ã ½-mile span of roadway. Our neighborhoods and countryside are being plagued daily by enormous amounts of empty bottles and cans. People don't think twice about pitching their empties out of the car window. An uncaring attitude is taking over society. Although Coca-Cola seems to be reaping the benefits of our fast-paced, thirsty society, our beautiful land is not so lucky. On Saturdays, I see Boy Scout Troop 99 picking up trash using separate sacks for the bottles and the cans. By noon, their total bottle and can collection for a one-mile radius generally fills about 17 large garbage bags. Obviously, this is proof that these disposable bottles and cans are destroying the beauty of our neighborhoods. Another example I have encountered is the ugliness presented on Highway 66 between Luther and Wellston. Again, it is common to se e paper sacks full of bottles and cans thrown to the side of the road. Subsequently, the bottles break in pieces over the side of the highway, threatening flat tires for the motorists. Playgrounds are demolished by cans left behind after picnics on Sunday afternoons. Parks have been invaded by party groups too lazy to hit the trash cans. Instead, glass is broken and left behind for others to deal with. In addition to blemishing our neighborhoods and countrysides, disposable bottles and cans cause hazards to the wildlife. Disposable bottles and cans result in tremendous dangers to wildlife in our environment. For the buyer's convenience, throwaway cans are packaged using connected plastic rings to hold the cans in a six-pack. But this packaging method is anything but a convenience to our wildlife. Instead, the plastic rings yield tremendous dangers to our lake and pond wildlife. Ducks, geese and many other types of water birds get tangled up in these plastic rings and struggle for hours to break free. Kant Moral Law Theory Essay
ââ¬Å"Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing admiration and awe the oftener and more steadily we reflect on them: the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me. â⬠ââ¬â Kant (1788), pp, 193, 259 Immanuel Kant introduced and initiated his ââ¬Ëmoral law theoryââ¬â¢ in the late 18th century. The doctrine in question sought to establish and constitute a supreme or absolute principle of morality. Kant disputes the existence of an ââ¬Ëethical systemââ¬â¢, whereby moral obligations are obligations of ââ¬Ëpurposeââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëreasonââ¬â¢. The accuracy of actions [i. e. the rightness or wrongness of an individual deed] is determined by its configuration and conformity with regard to ââ¬Ëmoral lawââ¬â¢. Evidently, according to Kant, an immoral transaction is invariably contemplated as an illogical or unreasonable occurrence or action. The supreme moral principle is a consistent ââ¬Å"working criterionâ⬠that proves to be ââ¬Å"practically helpful and theoretically enlighteningâ⬠when used by rational agents as a guide for making personal choices (Kant VI). A supreme guiding moral principle must carry with it an absolute necessity and be done out of duty to the moral law in order to be free from corruption. Kant believed in a fair and impartial law. He accredited and affirmed the presence of an objective moral law that we, as humans, were/are able to identify with through the process of reasoning. Kant argued that we are able to recognise and distinguish moral law, without making reference to the possible consequence or outcome. Immanuel Kant declared a differentiation between statements [i.e. posteriori and priori] that he believed to coincide with moral law. A posteriori statement is one that is based on experience of the material world. In opposition, a priori statement requires no such knowledge; it is known independent of the phenomenal world. Furthermore, Kant continued to make additional distinctions with regard to analytic and synthetic statements. An analytic statement, he claims, is one that by its very nature is necessarily true, as the predicate is included within the definition of the subject. Example: ââ¬â [ââ¬Å"all squares have four sidesâ⬠]. The previous statement is of an analytic nature, as the predicate, i. e. the square having four sides, is implicit and is part of the definition of the subject ââ¬â [ââ¬Å"squareâ⬠]. An analytic statement is necessarily true ââ¬â true by its own authority, and is purely explicative, as it tells us nothing new about the subject. In contrast, a synthetic statement is one in which the predicate is not included in the definition of the subject, and thus is not necessarily true. A synthetic statement also tells us something new about the subject. Prior to Kant, it was widely accepted that there were only two types of statement: a priori analytic and a posteriori synthetic. Kant accepted these two statements although believed there to be a third: a priori synthetic statement. These are statements that are known independent of experience that may or may not be true. Kant claimed that these priori synthetic principles are inherent within us and therefore subsequently form the basis of all moral decision making. Kantââ¬â¢s theory is based on and is primarily concerned with the aspect of ââ¬Ëdutyââ¬â¢. Kant believed and promoted the notion that to act morally is oneââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ëdutyââ¬â¢, and oneââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ëdutyââ¬â¢ is to act and proceed in accordance to the principles of moral law. Due to this, Kantââ¬â¢s theory is categorised and distinguished as a ââ¬Ëdeontological argumentââ¬â¢. A deontological theory is one that maintains the moral rightness or wrongness of an action and depends on its fundamental qualities, and is independent of the nature of its consequence ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Duty for dutyââ¬â¢s sakeâ⬠. This perspective can be viewed in contrast to the beliefs and ââ¬Ërulesââ¬â¢ associated and belonging to teleological arguments, i. e. utilitarianism. Immanuel Kant argued that moral requirements are based on a standard of rationality he dubbed the ââ¬Å"Categorical Imperative. The categorical imperative has derived from the initial belief and notion that humans base their moral judgment on pure reason alone. This view can be viewed in contrast to a ââ¬Ëmorality theoryââ¬â¢, which assumed/s that humanââ¬â¢s actions are guided by emotions or desires. Example: When deciding what I ought to say to a friend who is distraught. Rationale would dictate that I give sensible advice, whereas my emotions may impulsively tell me to give comfort and sympathy. The categorical imperative declares and differentiates between obligatory and forbidden actions, and places further emphasis on the notion of ââ¬Ëdutyââ¬â¢. This statement can be strengthened through the following quotation ââ¬â [ââ¬Å"All in imperatives command either hypothetically or categoricallyâ⬠¦ If the action would be good simply as a means to something else, then the imperative is hypothetical; but if the action is represented as a good in itselfâ⬠¦ then the imperative is categorical. â⬠]. Example: If someone tells me that they will buy me dinner if I give them a lift into town, then this is a conditional action and would fall into the hypothetical imperative category. Conversely, if I think that I should give my friend a lift into town with no other agenda (i. e. she will not buy me dinner because of it), then this is a categorical imperative because it is independent of my interest and could apply to other people as well as myself. There are three principles of the categorical imperative: * Universal law; * Treat humans as ends in themselves; * Act as if you live in a kingdom of ends. 1. The categorical imperative is [ââ¬Å"Do not act on any principle that cannot be universalisedâ⬠]. In other words, moral laws must be applied in all situations and all rational beings universally, without exception. 2. [ââ¬Å"Act that you treat humanity, both in your own person and in the person of every other human being, never merely as a means, but always at the time as an end. â⬠] ââ¬â The previous statement declares that we must never treat people as means to an end. You can never use human beings for another purpose, to exploit or enslave them. Humans are rational and the highest point of creation, and so demand unique treatment. 3. The quotation [ââ¬Å"So act as if you were through your maxim a law-making member of a Kingdom of endsâ⬠] states Kantââ¬â¢s belief in the fact that humans should behave as though every other individual was an ââ¬Ëendââ¬â¢. In conclusion, it is arguable that the categorical imperative possesses a sense of authority with regard to what actions are permitted and forbidden under Kantââ¬â¢s moral law theory.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
5th November 2007A visit to Columbia University and the chaotic aftermathAfter being allowed to address the Columbia University, Iranian president Mohamed Ahmadnijan showed a rare character and a high level of social hardness. He blasted the American society and saying there was no gays in Iran. The eccentric leader of the republic of Iran is seen as a controversial and as an inspiration in the extremist movement. His position and virtues that aim at drawing out need to wipe Israel out of the map and to destabilise the West through all aspects of concerted violence and extremist principles, obviously resonate as great and are indicative of what the extremism followers should look up at in a leader. He has funded terrorist organizations and helped the insurgency in Iraqi with a purpose of frustrating the West and the effort of the international community to stabilise Iraqi.Insults to the UN and the USThe Iranian leader dismissed the United Nations and ridiculed its authenticity and le gitimacy. What he implied was the inability of policy within the structures of the UN and projected the US as the sole decision maker at the body. This view is myopic and absurd. He launched a scathing attack on the US at Columbia University.Controversial character and intentionsHis visit to Columbia University on 17th September 2007 has further transformed the leader to a major threat to the Westââ¬â¢s relationship with the Middle East and other Muslim countries. Mohamed received a hostile reception at the University. His visit within a literally approach was designated to be a symbolic truce with the Westââ¬â¢s culture and system but due to a rigid perspective on him and the commonplace attitude and general perception, Ahmednijadââ¬â¢s aims and objectives were not understood. He realised within his faculties, the hatred and fear the American nation regarded him with. Subsequently he saw how ready the West was to ââ¬Ëat any chance to get rid of him. Diplomacy came to a d ead end with the senate at Columbia coming under criticism for allowing him to address the University gathering. Ahemdnijan was branded a ââ¬Ëholocaust denier and a perpetrator of terrorism. The Columbia University president termed him as an intellectual mind set and an un-educated leader. This is the hatred Ahmednijad saw and felt in the United States Columbia University. His behaviour and character as seen in context before this was not focussed on neither intonation nor abhorrent ethos towards America but symbolic and reaching out moves which in the same context were not seen nor recognized by the American society. What sparks this controversial and hate towards the Iranian leader is the fanatical and anti West fanaticism in him, also his strategic positioning of Iran as a pillar of Islamic extremism, consistent attacks on American foreign policy and blasting of diplomatic efforts to end the nuclear standoff which has invoked sanctions on Iran.à In reciprocation to this animo sity Ahmednijan sought to commence his fall back position through diplomacy. He replied in a principled perspective. He confronted within the same schematic approach the Americans had done. He questioned the integrity of the Columbia University president Mr Bollinger and subsequently claimed the rights of Iran to own nuclear weapons just as the West owned. According to Anthony F and Robin W., (2007) à ââ¬ËAhmadinejad, who in the past has argued that Israel should be ââ¬Å"wiped off the map,â⬠repeated his assertions that the Holocaust should be researched ââ¬Å"from different perspectivesâ⬠and said Palestinians should not be ââ¬Å"paying the price for an event they had nothing to do with.â⬠The Iranian leader also blasted U.S. sanctions against his country, insisted on Iran's right to nuclear development and declared his willingness to ââ¬Å"dialogueâ⬠with U.S. leadersââ¬â¢. His behaviour by then was characterized with apt criticism of the West hypoc risy and desire to see that they managed the greater global policies. He repeated that the holocaust needed to e researched. The aftermath was an onslaught on his sanity and audacity as a leader.à Diplomacy and amnestyAhmednijad might have opted to appease Americans through diplomacy. There are many issues within the history of the West problem with Iran. Both view each other as a threat to the others interest only that the West is autonomous, militarily stronger and more strategic economically and politically. Iran is only a minnow with more strategic position within religious lines and political-religious positions. This aspect has spared it the possible military strike by Americans. Although the United States has been more cautious with Iran, the debut of France in the anti Iran sentiment and the promise of military action as an eventuality add panache to the West desire to stop Iranââ¬â¢s strategic position growth. Ahmednijad wants to prove he is the key to the Middle East p roblem since he represents the radical ness and the extremist policies the Islamic community. The Iranian leader acted in speed to show his stand and diplomatic aspects as a leader. He advised his government to release a Californian businessman Ali Shekri who had been jailed in Iran. He morally was seeking retribution and sought to justify desire to establish peace and cohesiveness. But due to the abrasiveness and blindness of the American lawmakers and leaders, the Iranian leader saw no relenting. Subsequently his general issued a statement that insinuated that Iran was more militarily steady and ready. There was also the launch of two air force aircrafts which symbolised the industrialised and military power of Iran. This was an act of provoking the international community especially the United States. His character complexity and moral perspectivesHowever his character is seen as more re-proactive and meant to seek the elasticity of the Americans hate and military options against I ran. The Iranian leader was ready to visit the ground ââ¬âzero. This would have been a symbolic and a significant gesture. He was to lay a wreath and probably make a speech. However the tensions after the Columbia University incident would render the entire visit for him dangerous. There were emotions and protests were all over. University students and civilians were on the streets chanting anti him. This was enough reason to refuse him the chance to go to the Ground-zero. But contextually, what was the motive of his intentions? Why would such an anti American leader wish to make a symbolic visit to a place where people from his religion and community killed thousands of innocent lives? This makes the Iranian leader controversial. In the event of a visit, no wonder Ahmednijads comments and sentiments would be more controversial than his remarks about the Jewish holocaust. He mght have justified jihad and the death of these people. He might have projected the Palestinian deaths wi thin this situation as what the Americans paid with the September 11.Further within this issue, Ahmednijan could not be a target of American extremists, obviously they donââ¬â¢t exist, and hence, he was not amused that, it was only a matter of distaste and the hate American legislators felt for him. It might be obvious he knew he could never get a chance to visit ground zero but confirming it through seeking the permission to is outward and provocative. This as seen within an academic perspective is a character that is seeking to find leewayââ¬â¢s and fissures in the American society and government so as to achieve personal goals. These goals are two-way-traffic. The Iranian leader might be seeking to make peace and embrace American foreign policy and become part of the international community, or is acting with impunity as an agent of the large extremist world to learn and find weakness in the American system.Worry and pessimism in Iranian leaderThough exuding confidence, the Iranian leader projected fear and desperacy to avert a war crisis. His intentions in the United States depict this character. The leaders is troubled and more in a quagmire than in good stead. Most probably he is worried by the French Foreign minister Bernard Kouchner remarks that France should prepare for war if Iran makes nuclear weapons, a sentiment shared by the United States. Ahmednijan might have weighed his options And saw he could not counter such brute force militarily. He knows the strength of Maericans through the Iraqi conflict but knows nothing of the French.Through visiting such a prestigious government funded Columbia University. David J (2007) argues that the Iranian president has been in a cage, he wants out but what he does every time he leaps up is to hang on in even when his foot is outside. He escalates in his justification of his country having nuclear power; Ahmednijan asserts in his Columbia interviews that ââ¬Å"Making nuclear, chemical and biological bomb s and weapons of mass destruction is yet another result of the misuse of science and research by the big powers. [â⬠¦] What can a perpetual nuclear umbrella threat achieve for the sake of humanity? If nuclear war wages between nuclear powers, what human catastrophe will take place? So we're quite clear on what we need. If [the US has] created the fifth generation of atomic bombs and are testing them already, what position are you in to question the peaceful purposes of other people who want nuclear power? We do not believe in nuclear weapons, period. It goes against the whole grain of humanity. [â⬠¦] I think the politicians who are after atomic bombs, or testing them, making them, politically they are backward, retarded.â⬠This seems a strategy to appease the American public on the Iranian nuclear intentions so as to pre-empt the French threat and be left with the US animosity and military intervention plans. Ahmednijad shows fear and strategic shift of his policy on nucl ear weapons. This way the public debate transforms from the context of his violating the proliferation faculties and embracing religious backed extremes.Going to Columbia is an insignia of his acknowledgement of American education and federal system. He is trying to be identified with the community and seeks to tone down his strong desire to be vocal against these institutions and instead be seen as a moderator of policies. He wants to prove his actions and statements are basically intended to mend and project positive perspectives in the interest of the Iran and the Middle East. His character raises the storms at home where his popularity is waning drastically. He is seen as an Islamic leader rather than a president of a republic. He is not dwelling on domestic issues but constantly criticizing the West and the Israeliââ¬â¢s. His actions do not represent the majority of his supporters and political cronies as more pressure mounts on Iran making military strikes inevitable. Though his approach to popularity is myopic, he is a symbol of Islamic rise against Western imperialism. buy custom Securing the Crime Scene essay Cross-contamination of forensic science evidence refers to the presence of trace evidence on a significant item (Brown Davenport, 2011). Trace evidence, such as hair, blood, paint, and fibers, is readily transferable from one item to another. This fact raises the issue of the forensic science evidence cross-contamination (Brown Davenport, 2011). A significant evidence can mix with a trace evidence during the investigation process.. Many forensic investigators have arrived at wrongful conclusions because of the cross-contamination of significant evidence. It is possible to avoid cross-contamination by following well-controlled forensic procedures during the investigation. Forensic investigators perform strictly controlled procedures in order to make it certain that cross-contamination has happened during the crime and not during the investigation (Brown Davenport, 2011). This discussion will consider the effectiveness of the procedures that help protect forensic science evidence fr om the cross-contamination. Securing the crime scene, proper packaging during collection, and secure transportation of the significant evidence, are the crucial steps that forensic officers should observe (Brown Davenport, 2011). Forensic officers should observe maximum care during each step in order to avoid the possibility of the cross-contamination after the discovery of the crime. Securing the crime scene avoids the cross-contamination effectively because the sources of trace evidence do not cross to the significant evidence. While securing the crime scene, the forensic officers should then collect, handle, and pack with care the significant evidence. They should pack each piece of evidence separately in the clean containers and label them correctly. Secure transportation ensures that the packages of significant evidence arrive to the forensic laboratories for the examination (Brown Davenport, 2011). Therefore, because of the possibility of the cross-contamination, forensic officers should be extremely careful while handling the forensic science evidence. Securing the crime scene, proper packages, and secure transportation of the significant evidence, effectively avoid the cross-contamination. The presence of trace evidence may lead to the wrongful conclusion after the analysis. Buy custom Securing the Crime Scene essay

Are You on Google+ Users Beware!
Are You on Google+ Users Beware! I donââ¬â¢t know about you, but I get frightened easily. Especially by how much Google knows about me. Yesterday my office chair fell apart and so I did a Google search for a balance ball chair; in the right margin, up came an advertisement for Jockey underwear. Letââ¬â¢s see: I ordered from Jockey yesterday. Do they really think I need *more* underwear today? Maybe the bots arenââ¬â¢t smart enough to know whether I actually purchased that item or just browsed and might need a reminder to pull the trigger. Or maybe they canââ¬â¢t tell what items are likely to be re-purchased and which will last me the next two years? I mean, if I purchase bus tickets to Chicago I very well might need them again next week. But underwear? In any case, Google knows me well. Too well. And now theyââ¬â¢re invading even more. As of November 11, Google is able to tell my friends, family and colleagues that I endorse certain products, unless I opt out. My picture and even quotations from me can be used in ads for these items! Hereââ¬â¢s what Google has to say about their new policy: Here are a few examples of shared endorsements on Google. The Summertime Spas example below shows a shared endorsement displayed in an ad: Setting: Shared Endorsements in Ads This setting below allows you to limit the use of your name and photo in shared endorsements in ads. It applies only to actions that Google displays within ads; the Summertime Spas example above shows a shared endorsement appearing in an ad on Google Search. Changing this setting does not impact how your name and photo might look in a shared endorsement that is not in an ad - for example, when you share a music recommendation that is displayed in the Play Store. You can limit the visibility of activity outside of ads by deleting the activity or changing its visibility settings. So after I buy my balance ball chair, and especially if I write a review of that chair, my connections may get ads telling them that I recommend the chair. Yikes! As a businesswoman, this frightens me even more than having Jockey underwear ads pop up in my browser. I do *not* want to use my position of respect (dare I say influence?) to sell products unrelated to my field. How obnoxious! And to make matters worse, Google wonââ¬â¢t even give me a piece of the pie if my influence leads to a sale (yes I am mercenary too). Thankfully, there is a way to opt out. But insidiously, I received no announcement from Google warning me about this change in their privacy policy. Instead, I heard about it through my networks. It will not surprise me if a petition starts circulating asking Google to have the default setting be that someoneââ¬â¢s picture and information can NOT be used to promote products. But as of now, itââ¬â¢s up to me and others like me to spread the word. If you have a problem with this policy, please take the opportunity to opt out. Note: If you joined Google+ after October 15, it seems you are automatically opted out. If your account is older than that, the default is to opt you in. Beware! I may as well take this opportunity to invite you to connect with me on Google+. I happen to know that many of you have accounts, since I am already connected to you. And since I opted out of this Google+ craziness, you donââ¬â¢t have to worry about Brenda-endorsed Jockey ads appearing on your computer screen! Finally, if you do start getting strangely endorsed advertisements, you may want to let the alleged endorser know. That person probably wants to know how to stop the madness. Ads kept popping up when I clicked on links and blogs. All I did was check if name was capitalized or generic. I recently asked Google to make some of my personal information private as it was showing up on websites that I did not give permission to. What might be even scarier is when Google forces all the millions of email users to sign up for Google+ accounts. If you do not you may face the reality of not being able to read your email. I really try to limit how much of me gets out there in that fashion, so I really appreciate your warning! Log in to Reply The Essay Expert says: December 2, 2013 at 8:36 pm Youre welcome Donitta! Lizzie Borden's Verdict Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Lizzie Borden's Verdict - Essay Example Another solid reason for her being guilty is that she was the only one present in the house at the time of murder of her parents. This is a very genuine reason, as someone needs to enter the house, in order to kill her parents. And moreover many of the people like friends and relatives who were known to her parents were busy with other work at the time of murder. If any intruder had killed Bordenââ¬â¢s parents then he must have hidden in the house for 3 hours which looks less possible and illogical. And to kill two people brutally, only Lizzie had the time and comfort.Additonally, police were unable to find any intruder entering the house to kill Mr. and Mrs. Borden. For them everything looked like an inside job. One alarming fact is that Lizzie reported she did not hear any loud noise from upstairs during the time of murder of her step mother. Her step mother was axed numerous times and she fell on the floor, despite all of this she did not hear any noise. This looks like a white lie and points that Lizzie is lieing. Moreover; people have seen Lizzie visiting the drug store to buy posion. This shows her inclination to murder both of her parents. She also visited her neighbor on the previous night of the murder to inform them that one of her fatherââ¬â¢s enemy wants to t kill him and she is scared of the fact. According to (Masha, 2010) ââ¬Å"On the night before the murders, Lizzie told one of her neighbors that and ââ¬Å"enemy of her father would try to kill himâ⬠but during the murder there was no sign of forced entry into the Borden residenceâ⬠. Here we can see that Lizzie is trying to turn the attention of people around her from assuming her as the key murderer. She also lied that in the morning of the day of murder, an unidentified men came asking for her mother with a note but police could not find any evidence of a note or visiting of an intruder.

Strategic management leadership Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
Strategic management leadership - Essay Example Fro public organizations to cope with this trend and demand of the present time, there is the need that it adopt a strategic management so as to effectively utilize its resources in meeting immediate objectives and long term goals. Strategic management is then seen as a rational planning process to enable an organization operates more effectively in its environment. To this end, Armitage (1992), define it as a continuous process that works to fit an organization into its changing environment. Thus, strategic management is broader in concept than strategic planning; it entails both strategic planning, which a long term is planning process, and strategic decision, which decisions are taken without consideration to the length of term frame. The strategic management pattern of every organization may differ from what is obtainable in another. While there are areas of similarities, certain aspects are uniquely structured out to suit the operation of the organization in concern. Thus, this essay would compare and contracts on strategic management techniques adopted by two case studies, i.e. Office of Real Property Service (ORPS) and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The strategic management techniques would be used at looking at the impact it has on strategic leadership and the strategic processes adopted by each organization THE PROCESS OF AN IDEAL STARTEGIC MANAGEMENT As earlier stated, strategic management entails a continuous process that works to make an organization fit into its operating environment by the adequate utilization of its resources. Thus, it involves strategic planning, i.e. long range planning, and decision making that covers the operational activities of the organization without regards for time frame. The implementation of strategic management system is the administrative responsibility of a group of the firm's partners and managers. According to Armitage (1992), the implementation of the strategic management system must be approached in a manner indicating that the small planning group is not trying to take over the firm. It must be made clear from the start that the group will work within the bounds of the organization and that all members of the firm will have input into the process. The support for the strategic management can be increased by the use of consensus decision making rather than formal vote taking. Voting can le ad to division rather than uniting the organization. Consensus decision on the other hand fosters the working together of workers and leads to increased cooperation among members of the organization. The process of strategic management should first focus on formulating the organization's mission and the overall direction of the organization. With the clarification of this, better goals and objectives can be set for the firm to help achieve its mission. On the early stage, the process of strategic management should attempt at identifying those major strategic issues facing the firm. Also, the leaders of the organization should focus on the future strategic issues the organization may face. The next phase of the process involves analyzing the firm's strength and weakness, involving an environmental analysis, and current
